The city of Szczecin, Poland has 16 Solaris Urbino series hybrid buses: 8 articulated vehicles and 8 12-meter units. This is the second-largest Polish contract for hybrid buses produced in Bolechowo this year, right after the order placed by Pabianice.
The 12-meter bus is powered by a 157 kW 4.5-liter Cummins ISB, 145 kW generator and 120 kW traction motor; the 18-meter articulated bus is powered by a 157 kW 6.7-liter Cumins diesel, 200 kW generator and 200 kW traction motor.
The diesel engine turns off completely during stopovers at bus stops and the opening of doors, but it turns on again immediately after the supercapacitators run out of power. A GPS has been installed in the vehicle, too, including corresponding software that allows for the activation of the Arrive-and-Go function. This option allows to switch off the diesel engine as the bus is approaching a bus stop.
Various tests have shown that owing to this environmental-friendly feature the bus is able to save up to 20%of the fuel needed by similar vehicles with a conventional drive.
In recent weeks only the Polish manufacturer delivered or signed contracts for 127 hybrid buses in Poland. At the end of 2017 Kielce and Tomaszów Mazowiecki alone received 25 low emission vehicles each. New orders were placed by Czechowice-Dziedzice, Legnica, Luboń, Oświęcim, Pabianice, Piła, Płock, Pobiedziska, Świnoujście and now also Szczecin.
